South Middle School Performers Learn from Accomplished Playwright
South Middle School scholars who are performing in their upcoming spring musical Beautiful Hair had the unique opportunity of a visit from Ronvé O’Daniel who wrote the book, music, and lyrics for the production.
During their visit, student performers had the chance to ask dozens of questions about their various characters. They were able to better understand the thinking that went into the development of each character.
Students were also able to learn about a career in the arts by hearing about Ronvé O’Daniel’s accomplished path having written seven play/musical productions to date. His show Once Upon a Rhyme was recently selected as part of the competition TV series Opening Night America, an exciting new path to Broadway that will present audiences with four new musicals, whose creators and professional cast will be put through their paces under the direction and guidance of celebrity mentors, such as Tony and Emmy award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth.
Following the question and answer session with the cast, Mr. O’Daniel shared his story with each grade level in the school.
Coinciding with the eventful day, South Middle School was celebrating Crown Day in Honor of Black History Month. Students were asked to showcase their creativity and rock their favorite natural hairstyles: Afros, Curly Fros, Bantu Knots, braids, cornrows, twists, locs, caesars, fades, and more. At the end of each presentation with the playwright, students were invited to participate in a crown catwalk around the auditorium displaying their crowns.
South Middle School will be performing Beautiful Hair | The Musical on February 28th at 7pm and March 1st at 12pm and 3pm. Tickets are free with a suggested donation of $5 per person.
