NFA Senior Tina Wang Shadows Senator James Skoufis in Albany

We are incredibly proud to highlight Tina Wang, a distinguished senior at Newburgh Free Academy, who recently spent an inspiring day in Albany shadowing Senator James Skoufis. This immersive experience offered Tina a firsthand look at the inner workings of New York State government and the legislative process.

During her visit to the State Capitol, Tina’s itinerary was as rigorous as it was enlightening:

  • Legislative Strategy: She sat in on high-level legislative meetings with Senator Skoufis and his senior staff.

  • Committee Oversight: She attended a meeting of the Investigations & Government Operations Committee, witnessing how bills are vetted before reaching the floor.

  • Capitol History: She received a guided tour of the historic Capitol building.

  • The Senate Floor: In a rare and special opportunity, she was invited onto the floor of the Senate Chamber to observe the heart of the state’s democratic proceedings.

A Leader in the Classroom and on the Field

Tina’s day in Albany is a natural extension of her deep commitment to leadership within Newburgh Free Academy and the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. Her resume reflects a student who is not only dedicated to her academics but to the betterment of her entire school community.

  • Student Governance: Tina serves as the NFA Student Council Executive Vice President and represents the student voice as an ex-officio member of the NECSD Board of Education.

  • Academic Excellence: She is a member of five distinct National Honor Societies (Science, English, Italian, Art, and the NHS), notably serving as the President of the Art Honor Society.

  • Civic Advocacy: Beyond the NFA Speech & Debate Team (President) and Youth in Government delegate, she is a Varsity Girls Lacrosse athlete and a designated Morgan’s Message Ambassador, advocating for student-athlete mental health.

Tina has been exploring her interests as it relates to law and policy in terms of her future career aspirations. This experience provided an integral opportunity and vast networking opportunities for her growth and development as a current scholar and future alumna, shaping her future.
